What You Need to Know Today: June 30
Good afternoon, Early Risers!
Here’s what you need to know today
Tech
What you need to know about paid music streaming. Apple Music rolls out today, here’s what one early user is saying (pics included). How does Apple Music compare to its competitors, you ask? Pandora claims over 85 million active users. Spotify slightly less at 75 million active users. Even less talked about is Sirius XM Holdings Inc. that added over 27 million paying subscribers in its first quarter in 2015. Market Watch broke down these music streaming giants.
Passwords aren’t fetch anymore. Free publishing platform Medium is getting rid of passwords. Their solution: one-time use passwords sent via email. Think, the “forgot password” feature. At first glance this seems like it could be more secure, but as some have pointed out: “email isn’t really that secure” and “More importantly this just sounds hella annoying.” What do you think? Will passwords disappear in the future?
Career
Give me one good reason. You won’t believe this. Right now a coloring book is #7 on the UK Amazon best selling books page, and has been in the top 100 list for 115 days! If you’re as surprised as me, read this. The secret to selling anything is to give someone a reason to buy and this coloring book publisher knows just how to do it.
The Wild West of retail. It seems young entrepreneurs everywhere have found a lucrative way to buy and resell clothing, shoes, accessories…using only their smartphones and a free app. This has to be one of the fastest and easiest ways to make a buck. The best part is the platform in use doesn’t take a cut…at least for now.
Humans of Greece. If you’re reading this, I assume you’ve heard Greece is in trouble. Today is the deadline to pay $1.8 billion by 6 PM to the International Monetary Fund and it’s not looking good i.e. people are considering this a viable option. Sunday, a referendum will be held – here’s what young greeks are saying. Also, Buzzfeed has resurrected this spoof monopoly board that sums up how greeks are probably feeling.
+ LATEST – The crisis that will soon hit after Greece (yet nobody is talking about it)
Personal Development
See if you can solve this…What’s the best way to unplug? The answer: shut off all your devices. The sad news is most people want to believe the answer is something different. “On some level, we know that doesn’t make sense, but we don’t have an app to convince us.” This is called the Internet’s Placebo Effect.
+ 36 books every young and ambitious person should read.
